How Children's Teeth Erupt and Fall Out

Posted by 4th and Morris Dentistry on Mar 21 2022, 08:35 PM

Begin good oral hygiene habits as soon as your child's first baby tooth appears. As your child's baby teeth fall out, stress the importance of good dental hygiene. 4th & Morris Dentistry cares for you and your child's oral health.

Teething

The term "eruption" refers to a tooth breaking through the gum line. “Teething” is another term for tooth eruption in babies. The eruption of teeth varies from child to child. For example, one child may cut their first tooth when they are only a few months old, whereas another may not begin teething until they are at least 12 months old.

Although the exact timing varies from child to child, the order of tooth development is more consistent.

Five Teething Stages

It is during teething that an infant's primary teeth (baby teeth, deciduous teeth, or milk teeth) appear. This lasts from 3 months to several years.

  • Stage 1: (0-6 months) Babies are born with twenty teeth under the gums.
  • Stage 2: (6 months) The incisors (front teeth) erupt first.
  • Stage 3: (10-14 months)
  • Stage 4:Canines (between incisors and molars) erupt (16-22 months).
  • Stage 5: Large molars erupt (25-33 months).

Falling Out of Baby Teeth

Babies' teeth start to become 'wobbly' and fall out around the age of 6. A child losing their first tooth a year or two before or after the age of six is perfectly normal. Girls usually lose their teeth before boys. The front tooth of the lower jaw usually goes first.

Baby tooth loss is distressing for young children. Here are some tips for parents:

  • Encourage your child to accept the loss of their baby teeth as a natural process. While some children are not bothered by losing their teeth, it is normal for their gums to be tender and bleed.
  • Use cold packs or over-the-counter pain relievers to relieve loose tooth pain. Ask your dentist or pharmacist about your child's medications.
  • The Tooth Fairy, this myth has been around for a long time. The idea of getting money or another reward for a tooth may help your child accept it.
